What is self-organization?
Self-organization is the evolutionary organizing principle of the universe.
It is nature’s way to organize.
Nature organizes itself into highly interconnected and interdependent structures. Snowflakes are a great example of that.
As supercooled water droplets collide and freeze when they fall from the sky, snowflakes are formed, exhibiting complex global structures without any central organization.
Understanding the unique principles that trigger natural self-organization offers us key pointers into ways of organizing human endeavors.
When we self-organize our endeavors, we mirror these organizing principles in service of a desired outcome, of a purpose. Self-organization leads to an entirely new, power-shifted way of being present in any given moment while doing work together.
In self-organization we:
Allow purpose to lead
Structure relationships and work with high awareness of boundaries
Take dynamic actions based on present moment awareness
Use agency for systemic and personal sovereignty, freedom and flexibility
Provide clarity through making our authentic selves and all work undertakings visible.
Self-organization versus self-management
When self-organizing the work, it is important to make the distinction between self-organization and self-management.
Self-organization (or self-organizing system) refers to rule sets that incorporate the 5 PowerShift™ Principles. The For-Purpose Enterprise is a full instance of a self-organizing system integrating anchored legal standing, capital, operations and workers. Holacracy® and Sociocracy are considered mature self-organizing operating systems with focus on operations.
Self-management refers to a number of practices and techniques that enhance an individual’s capacities to manage one’s own Purpose, Structure, Awareness, Agency and Visibility. These practices and techniques support us in embodying the PowerShift™ Pricniples through enhancing these capacities.
Self-organization and self-management are interdependent and inseparable. They support each other in unfolding the full potential of the PowerShift™.
